Putting Food on Tables in Need
As a global food company, it just makes sense for us to focus many of our community involvement efforts on feeding the hungry. We created our Helping Hungry Homes initiative to do just that. Helping Hungry Homes supports families faced with food insecurity issues through four main courses of action:
- Food Banks — Ongoing support to local and national food banks through product and monetary donations and awareness campaigns like our recent Helping Hungry Homes 10-city tour with celebrity cook, Paula Deen.
- School Nutrition Programs — Supplying food to the children that need it most through school-based nutrition programs like Kids Cafe.
- Disaster Relief — Hunger relief efforts when natural disasters occur, as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when we donated 143,000 pounds of ready-to-eat lunchmeat, 80,000 pounds of ice and 32,000 16-ounce bottles of water.
- Community Outreach — Supporting community-based groups to reach out to local families in need such as families of soldiers serving overseas.
Smithfield Foods' 10-City Helping Hungry Homes™ Across America Tour
Paula Deen, the "Queen of Southern Cuisine," recently joined Smithfield Foods' 10-city tour across America to provide one million servings of meat to the nation's hungry families. Paula, husband Michael Groover and sons Jamie and Bobby pitched in to help Smithfield Foods deliver and unload 250,000 pounds of much-needed protein to food banks around the country, creating heartfelt memories for volunteers and food recipients along the way.
The 10-city tour was just one part of Smithfield Foods' Helping Hungry Homes initiative which works with food banks, schools and community groups, and in the wake of natural disasters to support families faced with food insecurity issues. More than 35 million people live in households considered to be food insecure, including 22.9 million adults and 12.6 million children.
