Smithfield Foods Honored for Environmental and Workplace Safety Achievements by North American Meat Institute

January 28, 2020SMITHFIELD, Va., January 28, 2020 -- Smithfield Foods, Inc. today announced the North American Meat Institute (NAMI) has awarded 46 of its U.S. facilities and farms for environmental accomplishments, as well as 27 locations for workplace safety achievements. NAMI, the oldest and largest trade association representing meat packers and processors, highlighted the distinction as part of its 2020 awards program.
“At Smithfield, protecting the environment and keeping our people safe are among our top priorities,” said Bill Gill, assistant vice president of sustainability for Smithfield Foods. “We’re grateful for our team members and their continued dedication to our business. Without them, recognitions like this would not be possible.”
NAMI acknowledges companies that are committed to continuous environmental improvement with its Environmental Recognition Awards program. This program is divided into four tiers, beginning with simple environmental compliance policies and culminating with the more complex ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
Additionally, the NAMI Worker Safety Recognition Awards honor facilities for attaining high levels of safety performance, as well as implementation of various key components of an effective safety and health program, specifically injury and illness reduction efforts. The National Safety Council determines the designation level of each facility by analyzing both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Total Recordable Cases rate and the rate for Cases with Days Away from Work, Job Transfer or Restriction (DART).
